We build the footings too, and that changes the deck

Most deck builders subcontract the holes. We started as the people other builders call for footings, so on our own decks the footings and the frame are the same crew on the same job. Nothing gets lost between two trades, and nobody frames on top of a pier somebody else placed in the wrong spot.

It means the piers go to 48 inches where ground conditions allow, poured in sonotubes on undisturbed ground, before a single joist goes down. On the clay through Barrie and the sand out at Wasaga Beach, that is the difference between a deck that is still flat in ten years and one that starts sloping in three.

Decking, framing and railings

Pressure treated is the workhorse: the best price per square foot, and it takes stain well once it has dried out. Cedar costs more and rewards it, softer underfoot, better looking and naturally more resistant to rot. Composite costs the most up front and gives most of it back in maintenance, because it does not need sanding or staining and it holds its colour.

Framing is pressure treated either way. Railings can match the deck, or go glass or aluminium picket where you would rather keep a view, which comes up constantly on the properties around Georgian Bay and Kempenfelt Bay.

Permits and the Ontario Building Code

A deck usually needs a building permit once it is raised any real height above grade or attached to the house, and the rules on guards, stairs and footings come from the Ontario Building Code, enforced by your municipality. Barrie, Springwater, Wasaga Beach and the county townships each run their own building department.

We handle site preparation, including obtaining necessary permits, and build to what the approved drawings call for. If your deck is low, freestanding and small enough not to need one, we will tell you that too rather than adding a step you do not need.
